Creating an Age-Friendly Community

Release of Community Impact Report

The fastest growing demographic in Canada are people that are of 55 years and older. After the last election I committed to create what I called at the time: "The Seniors Summit Series". Since November of 2014, I co-chaired the summits with the Grand River Council on Aging. This initiative was to bring to light to the pressing issues seniors are facing. Since our first meeting, we have organized eight separate community gatherings to identify their concerns and issues and work towards making Brantford, Brant, Six Nations of the Grand River, and Mississauga of the New Credit age-friendly communities.

The community summits have allowed the Grand River Council on Aging and I to gather input from senior citizens about their ideas about an "inclusive" community. Our findings are included in a final report entitled "Creating an Age-Friendly Community: Community Impact Report". This report contains information that is valuable for governments and planning organizations across Canada at the municipal, provincial and federal level.

Please read the conclusions of these discissions and community consultations. I am confident that the information within these booklets will aid you on your journey to making your communities more "age-friendly".

I am very grateful that I have had the pleasure to initiate and work on this exciting and rewarding community project. I am very pleased with the Community Impact Report as it is the result of community members working together to make meaningful changes to ensure that people of all ages are included in their communities.
